No so ‘Invisible’ any more…
The radio show here in San Francisco I contribute to, Invisible Ink, a clever attempt to merge zine culture and public radio, has begun archiving its shows on the web. Now you can hear the first 4 episodes of a great new program I’m describing as “Utne Reader on the Radio.” I’m not in any of them but that shouldn’t stop you. I’m set to head into the studio this week to record my first story.
Invisible Ink can be heard every Sunday at 2 PM PST on KALW 91.7 FM public radio in San Francisco or live via the web at KALW.org.
Suzan and I ran into Roman Mars, the esteemed creator of the show yesterday at the Alternative Press Expo where we both gabbed about the zine world while she mostly rolled her eyes. More on that later…

So which is your favorite medium web or radio? If you had to declare just one as a favorite would that be a difficult choice?

Extremely.
Extremely.
Why decide between the two? In this pluralistic life of ours everything is coming together. We have great stations like WFMU, KALW, and those more indie ones to be found at live365.com. I’ve thought about creating a streaming show from my site myself so that friends and family can listen into the tunes we’re into.
What is it about radio work that interests you, Kev? What did you have in mind, interview show? or something more shock jock?

Paul,
For nearly all of my adult life, I’ve loved radio. Now I listen to about 4 hours a day, minimum and the “Signal to Noise” section of my links on the right side is my favorite radio shows. Why? Theater of the mind and all that. The hypnotic quality of it being in the room with you and that radio is the one medium that allows for smart people to be smart without having to explain themselves.
As far as me working in it, I see it as one piece of a puzzle, a medium that I love, that is ideal for raising awareness of books and literature, and raises my public profile. It’s also a way to do long form story telling combined with performing which thrills me. But it probably will never be the primary thing I do, unless I fall into some dream gig like Ira Glass’s job. I still primarily see myself as a writer but one who likes to write for the air, for print and for life performance. In no order of priority.
