Joly Good Show!
The first screening of my new monthly film series, Monday Night at (S)Moklers, went off like gang busters. The film I choose, 1961’s The Misfits, which Clark Gable and Marylin Monroe both starred in right before they died, may have landed like a led balloon but the company (Laura, Kristin, Wendy, Jane, Scott, and Joe) was exquisite.

Brooke and I have been hosting a “Film Club” for over a year now and we find it’s the best way to actually keep in touch with our busy friends while living in a big city. Plus, we’ve been able to see a lot of great films.

How do you choose movies? My goal is to watch classic stuff and foreign films but I don’t want to aliennate the audience with bad choices.

We started off trying to solicit suggestions, but it turned out people preferred if we chose the film. We have an invite list of about 20 but we only ever get between 6-12 people, so maybe our film choices appeal to some but not to all. We’ve seen a lot of classic stuff as well. I try to balance between decades, genres, etc. I’ll send you the list of what we’ve seen by email…

As a viewer, I’d like to point out that it’s not so much the movie as it is the opportunity to get together and hang out. Even the worst movie can be a bucket of fun with the right group of people. Movies that generate discussion are also worthwhile. Don’t sweat it too much, Kevin. We’ll still show up as long as you have popcorn and those peanut butter M&M’s (and enough seating).
